News 2009
April saw the ESSW AGM take place in Kent. It was all change at committee level with resignations from Celia Woodbridge, our outgoing Chairwoman and John Griffiths our Treasurer. Both have given ESSW such a lot of support over the years but are now handing over the reigns. Incoming members were Sandy Waldon as Chairman, Nikki Dodd as Treasurer, Kate Gillam as Secretary and Michele Poole and Hilary Eccles as Trustees. ESSW would like to welcome them all on board.
So, it's all change at ESSW and we hope to received your continued support while the new committee find their feet!
We'd also like to thank our fabulous team of coordinators for their work over the previous year, without them ESSW would not function, never mind how many members we have on the Committee it's the coordinators that make ESSW tick!
Hi! My name is Clare Green, I am 25 years old and live and work in Plymouth. I am running the Plymouth Half Marathon this year. I have completed te Cancer Research Race for Life the last 3 years and at the end of 2010 I challenged myself further by completing the Plymouth 10k which was also for Cancer Research. This has encouraged me to train and aim to complete the half marathon. It is something I have wanted to do for a couple of years, I have just never plucked up the courage to do it!
I decided to try to raise money for the ESSW as I have 2 Springers who live with my step dad; Zeb who is a staggering 17 years old (and still plodding on!) and Ben who is 13 years old. I practically grew up with Zeb and both dogs mean the world to me. They are such faithful companions and always manage to make me smile with their silly habits. I know how important it is to make sure every spaniel has a loving home and although this isn't always possible, I know the money raised will help all those dogs have a happy life until they do find homes.
A sponsorship form will be available here shortly - in the meantime send me your pledges at clareq28@hotmail.co.uk
What a great to start to the new year for English Springer Spaniel Welfare! We would like to announce that we have received a £3,000 grant from The Pedigree Adoption Drive 2010, an initiative which aims to raise awareness of dog abandonment in the UK.
ESSW Chairman, Celia Woodbridge said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive such generous funding from The Pedigree Adoption Drive. The £3,000 grant will be used to augment our existing neutering and microchipping programme for all springers that are re-homed through us. We will launch our planned voucher system for both these procedures (where necessary) within our adoption packs in 2011.”
As rescue centres are under increasing pressure as the numbers of stray and abandoned dogs in the UK continues to rise, many are reliant on funding from campaigns such as The Pedigree Adoption Drive to continue their work.
Stephen Rendu, Marketing Manager for the Pedigree Adoption Drive said: “The recession has undoubtedly played its part in animal welfare as dog abandonment has risen by 10.3% in the year 2010. The Pedigree Adoption Drive has not only raised significant funds to help maintain the excellent work of the rescue centres but has highlighted the important message of responsible dog ownership.”
The success of this year’s campaign follows a new hard-hitting approach to increase awareness of the issue of dog abandonment. High profile dog lovers such as Graham Norton, Amanda Holden and Kevin Spacey helped to raise awareness of the campaign. In addition, the public were encouraged to hunt for “Golden Leashes” in cities across the UK which unlocked donations from Pedigree.
